Benchtop Instrument Automation for R&D Product Development

A LabVIEW instrument driver application integrating and automating multiple benchtop instruments — reducing manual setup time and dramatically improving test repeatability for an R&D product development team.

Published January 2024

Project Overview

An R&D product development team in Orlando, Florida needed to accelerate their bench-level testing workflow. Engineers were spending significant time manually configuring multiple benchtop instruments — adjusting knobs, entering settings, and repeating configurations across test runs. The process was slow, error-prone, and made it difficult to guarantee consistent test conditions from one run to the next. Korpra was brought in to design and deliver a LabVIEW-based instrument driver application that would automate the entire benchtop test setup and execution process.

Deep Instrument API Integration

The core of this project involved deep integration with the native APIs of multiple benchtop instruments. Rather than simple high-level SCPI commands, the application leveraged the full depth of each instrument's programming interface to expose every configuration parameter, measurement mode, and trigger setting the R&D engineers needed. This gave users programmatic control over settings that previously required manual interaction with front-panel knobs, menus, and displays — all from a single unified LabVIEW interface.

Reducing Setup Time & Improving Repeatability

Before the automation, configuring a multi-instrument test bench for a single test run could take considerable time, and small variations in manual settings introduced inconsistencies that affected data quality. With the new application, engineers could load a complete instrument configuration in seconds, execute test sequences with identical settings every time, and focus their expertise on analyzing results rather than turning knobs. The improvement in test repeatability was immediate — eliminating the human variability that had been a persistent challenge in their R&D workflow.

On-Site Delivery in Florida

While Korpra is headquartered in Victor, NY, this project demonstrates our ability to deliver on-site anywhere in the country. Our team traveled to Orlando, FL for installation, integration with the client's existing bench equipment, and hands-on training with their R&D engineering staff. The same personalized, engineer-to-engineer service we provide to our Western New York clients extends to every engagement — regardless of location.
